Grady Foster Obituary

Mr. Grady Jackson Foster, 84, of Thomasville NC passed away January 21, 2020 at Hospice Home of High Point. He had been in declining health for the past year and a half and was surrounded by family and friends throughout his illness and until his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers William D. Foster and Richard H. Foster and his sister Elenor F. Strider. The funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday January, 25th, 2020 at the J.C. Green and Sons Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Robin Johnson. The burial service will follow immediately afterwards at Holly Hill Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM prior to the service.

Jack was born in Belmont, NC to William Lefoy Foster and Hathaway King Foster on July 29th 1935. The family soon moved to Thomasville where they made their home. Jack attended Thomasville City Schools graduating from Thomasville Senior High in 1953. In 1954 Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force starting what would become a twenty-year career.

In 1974 Master Sergeant Foster retired from the Air Force after a highly decorated career. He served through the entirety of the Vietnam War, Stationed at Utapao Air Base in Thailand in 1970 supporting the combat effort. Through his career in the military he was stationed at various locations in the United States including Texas, Wyoming, Maine, and South Carolina. He also spent tours of duty in Okinawa and Japan.

Soon after retirement Jack started Foster Construction Company, building and remodeling homes and constructing show rooms for the International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, NC. He gained a reputation for craftsmanship and integrity during those years. Many of his clients were repeat customers and even in retirement would ask him for a consultation or advice.

For the remainder of his life he spent his time with building and repair projects out of his shop at home. Most who know him probably have something that he made with his hands in their home. Jack and Opal spent a lot of time in the various RVs that they owned traveling the US on many extended excursions. Traveling through the country with their beloved dachshunds became a passion that would last for the rest of his life. There is no doubt that he was still holding hope for one more trip until the end.

Jack was well read and constantly curious. He was excited by new innovations and embraced the digital age. He enjoyed the wonder of nature and the beauty of the outdoors and spent as much time there as he could. He loved being with his family and adored his dogs. He had a sharp wit and was a master story teller. He was a man’s man and admired men like him that did more than they said and refrained from making excuses. He was proud of his family and loved them all. He was a provider, protector, and a loyal friend and confidant. He was a hero to us all and will be missed beyond belief.

He is survived by his wife of over 61 years and the love of his life, Opal Harrelson Foster, of the home. He is also survived by his son, Joe Foster and wife Shiryl of Lexington, NC, his daughter, Sandra Shields of Thomasville, his son, Robert Foster of Asheboro, and his daughter Jackie Hahn and husband Chris of Charlotte. He has six grandchildren Kimberly Bailey and Erin Hubbard of Winston Salem, Ashley Christian of Rowan County, Matthew Foster of Lexington, and Sam and Owen Hahn of Charlotte; two great grandchildren, Grayson Foster of Lexington and Rosemarie Christian of Rowan County.

The family would like to convey our immense gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at The Wesley Long Cancer Center Hospital, Hospice House of High Point, and to his friend and caregiver Kendra Odom. Your kindness and support has been amazing and we will never forget you. In lieu of Flowers the family encourages donations to the Hospice House of High Point and The Davidson County Humane Society.
