Barry Duffield Obituary

Mr Barry Lee Duffield, 59, a resident of Thomasville, NC passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, December 4, 2025 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital under care of the Neurology ICU. He was born January 11, 1966, in Akron, Ohio. He was the son of Basil Leonard and Gladys Ruth Duffield.

A 1984 graduate of Coventry/Portage Lakes JVS, where he studied Machine Trades, Barry was known early on for his strong work ethic and determination. Only two weeks after graduation, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by joining the United States Marine Corps. He completed boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and proudly served his country while stationed in Okinawa, Japan, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal.

Upon returning, he moved to Thomasville, NC where he met the love of his life, Shawanda Johnson. After a short time, the two married on February 14, 1987.   Their story became the foundation of a beautiful family life filled with devotion and love that would lead to showering care on other children who would call them mom and dad. Barry was not only the rock and pillar of his family but the constant strength for all who knew and loved him. As a father, he watched over his daughter with the heart of a protector and cherished every quiet moment spent sharing coffee and conversation with his son.  Prior to the plant closure, Barry worked for 29 years with Leggett and Platt where he was known as Pops due to his willingness to mentor others.

Barry was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David Duffield, and his beloved wife Shawanda, who passed away January 16 this year. His memory will be cherished always by his children, Brandi Duffield Ginter of Thomasville and Cody Lee Duffield (Katie Smalley) of Archdale; his grandchildren, David Duffield Ginter, Molly Duffield Ginter, Lilly Adair, and Christopher Smalley; his siblings, Dennis (Susan) Duffield and Mary Ann (Bob) Kresowaty; and nieces and nephews Brent, Krystle, Randy, Sarah, Tiffany, Jacob, Adam, and Jeremiah. He also leaves behind sister-in-laws Krystal and Katrinka Johnson (Janet) and brother-in-law Scott Johnson.

Of all the roles Barry held in life, none brought him more joy than being “Pawpaw” to his grandkids. His daughter lovingly recalled that she had never seen a more devoted grandfather. His grandchildren were his heart, and he made their world brighter with his laughter, kindness, and unconditional love.  Barry’s legacy remains in the lives he touched and the example of strength, love, and integrity he leaves behind. He made every life he entered better—and every heart he loved, fuller.

No formal services will be held at this time.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to any Veterans Memorial or the Forsyth NSICU.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.jcgreenandsons.com.
