Bertha Elizabeth Poole Slate

Mrs. Bertha Poole Slate was born on May 16, 1933 in Montgomery County, NC.  Her mother, Mary Blake Poole and father, Lindsey Jones Poole, both passed away while she was a child.  Bertha was placed in the care of Mills Home Orphanage in Thomasville until she graduated from Thomasville High School.  After graduation, she married Donald (Don) Duane Slate.  Bertha and Don had three children who are surviving, her sons, Rodney Slate and wife Karen, and William (Rusty) Slate and wife Jana, and her daughter, Donna Labonte.  She was blessed with six grandchildren, Nick Slate (Christy) and Lindsey Broere (Neil), Brian Slate (Molly), Erin Slate, and Alyssa Slate, and Tyler Labonte (Bailey) and Madison Labonte.  She also had seven great-grandchildren, Bradyn and Beckett Slate, Layla, Adelai, Judah, and Asa Broere, and McRae Slate.

Early in the morning on July 16, 2020, Bertha slipped the surly bonds of earth and made her heavenly flight to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in May of 2002.  She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Lindsay, Fred, Bill, and Jerry and two sisters, Velma Poole Holt and Hilda Poole Kennedy.

There are many others that we would certainly call family that are still with us.  Three in particular are Ann Williams, Donna McKinley, and Tina Farlow.  These wonderful ladies were Bertha’s caregivers, her angels on earth.  Without them the last years of her life would have been much different.  Their sacrifice, patience, and love will forever be remembered and appreciated by her family.

Bertha will be remembered best for her love and concern for family and for others.  She always pulled for the underdog and the less fortunate.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you prayerfully consider a donation to Slate Aid Group, 46 E. Main Street, Thomasville, NC 27360, a non-profit that helps the less fortunate in the Thomasville community.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Pastor Neil Bowman and Rev. Jesse Crooks officiating.  Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.  No formal visitation will be held but the family will greet friends immediately following the committal service at the cemetery.  Mrs. Slate will lie in state at the funeral home for members of the community to pay their respects.  Online condolences may be sent to www.jcgreenandsons.com.
