Betty Thrift Obituary

Betty Rose Portis Thrift of Thomasville passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington on her 94th birthday.

Betty was born April 23, 1930 to the late Walter Taylor Portis and Myrtle Wallbridge Portis in Midway. She was a graduate of Midway School class of 1948, and was recognized as an exceptional athlete. Betty enjoyed playing basketball and was a star player. She became apart of the Thomasville community being a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Central Wesleyan Church. Betty enjoyed teaching a ladies Bible study for several years. She was employed by Kayby Mills as a sewer, A & P as a clerk, and enjoyed substitute teaching in the local area.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband Edward Lee Thrift in 1995; a son, Eddie Charles Thrift; grandsons, Brock Duran Thrift and Justin Wayne Thrift; several brothers and sisters.

Surviving are three children, Gary Wayne Thrift and wife Linda Carol of Asheboro, James Rodney Thrift and wife Joann of Thomasville, Susan Renee Thrift Mabe of Trinity; a brother, Walter Taylor Portis, Jr. of Clemmons; a sister, Ann Portis Berrier of Cornelius; ten grandchildren, Gary Wayne Thrift, II (Caprice), Shannon Renee Thrift Heiney (Mike), Megan Carol Thrift, Lindsay Rose Thrift, Rodney Scott Thrift (Morgan), Tia Machelle Hyde (Byron), Eddie “Chuck” Charles Thrift, Jr. (Sally), David Hunter Thrift (Maddie), Ashley Renee Lambeth (Josh), Cortney Lea Julien (Marc); many great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Louise Portis.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Central Wesleyan Church in Thomasville with Rev. Marty Martin and Rev. David Albertson officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park in Thomasville. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:30 PM in the church fellowship hall.
