Bobby (Bob) Lee Varner, Sr. Obituary

Bobby Lee Varner Sr. moved on to the next adventure of his life on October 6th 2020.

While he will be missed greatly by many friends and family members, we can be comforted in the knowledge that our prayers for him were answered. He was able to live out his incredibly full life in his much loved mountain home, tending his land and putting away firewood up until the day he was taken to the hospital.

Growing up in rural Davidson County Bob moved with his mother to Alabama at the age of 13 to be near his father who was living in the veterans hospital after being severely wounded in WWII.

While visiting his dad he started helping the other wounded soldiers in any way possible. Taking them to the cafeteria, movies or just for a stroll around the grounds. He soon became so endeared to the staff and patients that he was given a full dress officer’s uniform by a Belgian soldier that he had helped to get around while wheelchair bound.

Thus, began a life of exceptional generosity. A man of strong principles, work ethic and leadership he never turned his back on anyone in need. Always willing to give of his time and resources he became a friend of many.

Those of us who love him can honor him by following his example.

Bob is the son of Mont and Lois Varner who proceeded him in passing along with his sister, Molly Varner Carpenter and wife Joyce Smith Varner. He leaves behind his children, Kim Burgin and husband Rob, Lee Varner and wife Brenda, Chet Varner and wife Lorrie, Laura Henderson and husband Eric, and Brian Varner and wife Lauren; grandchildren, Anthony, Adam, Chase, Chad, Lindsey, David, Philip, and Sydney; great-grandchildren, Audrey, Clint, Davis, and Reese; brother-in-law, Donnie Carpenter; and special friends, Darlene Brinkley, Ray, Pam, and Roger.

A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Friday, October 9, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Archdale Friends Meeting, 114 Trindale Road, Archdale, NC with Pastor Scott Wagoner officiating.  The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the home of Eric and Laura.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Team Rubicon, Folds of Honor, or to Haywood Regional Medical Center.  Online condolences may be sent to www.jcgreenandsons.com.
