Brenda "Joyce" (Eddinger) Varner Obituary
Brenda Joyce Eddinger Varner, 84, a resident of High Point, passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2026 the Hospice Home of High Point. She was born on October 5, 1941, to M.L. (Bud) Eddinger and Kathleen Scarlette Eddinger in Thomasville, NC. She was employed at her father’s grocery store (Bud’s Self-Service Grocery) for many years. Joyce also worked at Oakley’s Books and Gifts Store in downtown Thomasville, where she impacted the lives of many of her customers. She graduated from Pilot High School in 1960. Joyce was a member of Rich Fork Baptist Church in her early years and later, joined Heidelberg United Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was very kind and caring to the children in her classes. She also attended High Rock Baptist Church and First Pentecostal Church of High Point. On November 19, 1983, Joyce married the love of her life, Eddie Varner and they enjoyed 42 years as husband and wife.
Joyce was a good cook and collected many cookbooks over the years. Many of her recipes are in local cookbooks. Two of her well-known recipes were Meatloaf and Strawberry Pudding. One of her favorite memories was picking strawberries and making strawberry jam, with her two great-nephews, Cameron and Chandler. She loved to go shopping with her mother, traveling to the mountains in the fall and fishing with her husband. Joyce often read Christian inspirational books in the evenings.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Eddie Varner of the home; a sister, Kathy Eddinger of Raleigh; a brother, H. Wayne Eddinger of Thomasville; a niece, Kym Shuler; and two great-nephews, Cameron Szaloky and Chandler Szaloky of Thomasville. Joyce will be remembered as a devoted wife, sister, friend and will be missed by everyone who knew her.
A private family graveside service will be held at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Bynum Orr and Chaplain Patricia Greene.
