Robert “Bruce” Overby, passed away March 20, 2025 at Clemmons Hospital. Bruce was born in High Point on February 28, 1941 to Olive Lundy Overby and James Fausta Overby. Bruce graduated from High Point Central High School and went on to double major in History and Industrial Arts at Western Carolina. Following college graduation, Bruce was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Henrico and the U.S.S. Mann where he made many trips across the Pacific during the Vietnam War. After leaving the military, Bruce returned home to the Piedmont where he worked in various construction roles. He spent the majority of his career as an estimator with Varco Pruden Buildings. At home he was a devoted husband and daddy as well as a reflective problem-solver, talented handyman, and woodworker.
Bruce was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Elaine Rosemary Taro Overby. Together, they shared a passion for collecting primitive antiques and fruit jars, building an impressive collection that reflected their shared appreciation for history and craftsmanship. Surviving are his daughter, Lara D. Overby, and son-in-law J. Mark Crook of Winston-Salem. Bruce moved into their home following declining health. He enjoyed spending his days at the Williams Adult Day Center where he participated in a variety of creative and artistic programs. His friends appreciated his humble nature, work ethic, and sense of humor. He is also survived by his sisters Carole Stein (husband Ed) of Baltimore, Maryland, and Sylvia Golden of Kernersville as well as nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 on March 26 at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory in Kernersville. Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 25, from 5:00-7:00 PM at J C Green and Sons Funeral Home (Wallburg) located at 10301 N. NC Hwy 109, Winston-Salem. Donations may be made in Bruce’s honor to Senior Services Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 2895 Shorefair Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
