Carl William White, age 83, better known to his family and friends as “Bud” entered into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Monday, July 13, 2026.

He was also known by his high school basketball team as “Turtle”, a nickname his Griffith High school basketball coach gave him. As years passed, Bud collected turtles and would always laugh when asked how he got that nickname.

Bud was born May 13, 1943 in Winston-Salem to Carl Bowers White and Cassie Victoria Jones White who preceded him in death.  His love and care for family and his heritage was always an important part of his life and caretaking. He leaves behind to cherish memories his wife of 61 years, Pat (Patricia Pruitt) daughter, Kimberly White Dawes (Timothy) of Columbia, S C, son, Kevin William White (Suzanne) of Raleigh, four grandchildren, Timothy William Dawes (Tatum) of Winston-Salem, Cassie Victoria Dawes of Winston-Salem, Grace Ann Dawes of Richmond, KY and Andrew William White of Chapel Hill; a sister, Drusilla White Eckberg of New Bern, a special sister-in-law, Sheila Pruitt of Kernersville, and several nieces and nephews.

After graduating from Griffith High School in 1961, Bud worked at J.A. Vance Machine Co., then R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Co. He served in the Army National Guard six years. Bud retired from R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Company after 34 years of service. 

After retirement, Bud became a volunteer with the Shepherds Center of Winston-Salem as a handyman and lawn care service. He also became the family furniture maker, building any “creation” or picture his daughter, Kim or son, Kevin, might need for their families and friends.  He always attended ball games Kim or Kevin played in throughout their school years and even traveled in and out of state to watch Soccer games, lacrosse, horse riding competitions, football and basketball games the grandchildren were involved in.  Bud enjoyed gardening, raising animals, going to stock car races at Bowman Gray Stadium and Nascar races specifically following Dale Earnhardt Sr. He also enjoyed attending and supporting Wake Forest Basketball and the Atlanta Braves. Bud had a love for fishing on the Sportsman Pier at Atlantic Beach, the rocks at Fort Macon and then “shell shopping” along the beach at Pine Knoll Shores. He always saw beauty or an animal in the broken shells he collected.

Through the past eighteen years, Bud struggled with Dementia but always had a smile. He remained active in various day programs, and continued to volunteer, with the help of his wife, Pat, as together they delivered Meals on Wheels for Senior Services, and baby items for Newborns in Need. The past four years, the staff and residents at Brighton Gardens became part of their family.

He was a member of Bethlehem Church for sixty + years were he prayed, played, and worshipped with family and friends while serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ before joining Cornerstone Baptist Church and New Friendship Baptist Church. A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, July 15, at 11 am at New Friendship Baptist Church, 4258 Old Lexington Rd., Winston-Salem. Family visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery, Old Lexington Rd., Winston-Salem.
