Carol Doby Obituary

Carol Rose Cox Doby, 83, of Thomasville went home to be with her Lord, May 18, 2025 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Carol was born May 12, 1942 to the late Thomas Jefferson Cox and Gladys Woodie Cox in Laurel Springs, NC. She worked as an educator for many years in the public school system. Most of all, Carol was the faithful caregiver of her son for many years and devoted her life to her child.

Carol was given the nickname “Tally” by her brothers because she would tell on them when they were unruly. That name stuck after her niece Connie was born when Carol was eighteen. She would come pick Connie up and ride her around while the little one would stand in the seat next to her yelling, “watch it Tally!” A great relationship was born between aunt and niece. This relationship continued as the two became adults. The trips to Cherokee were special adventures. Carol was an excellent video poker player, and shared all the points she earned with Connie and her friends. The winnings and the wonderful meals shared at the casino will always be special memories. Included in those memories are some fantastic barbecues with family. Carol loved Connie’s barbecue chicken, ribs, and corn. She would eat until she was very full, and take home a huge portion. Connie knew to always make extra when Tally was coming. She was a wonderful lady and will be missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her husband John Doby; her son, Lucas “Luke” Jefferson Doby; step-children, Myra, Dean and Gary Doby; a brother, Hiram Cox; a nephew, Chuck.

Left to cherish her memory are her brother, Thomas Jefferson Cox, Jr.; nieces, Connie, Kathy, and Karen; great-nephew, Chuckie; step-son, Mike Doby (Dawn); special friend, Susan; “daughters” Cindy and Sandra that she cared for as her own, and a cousin, Pamela.

A private graveside service will be held at Holly Hill Memorial Park. No formal viewing or visitation will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to American Cancer Society Online.
