Charles Edward Johnson Obituary

Mr. Charles Edward Johnson, 92, of Thomasville, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Pennybyrn Mayfield in High Point.

Born November 15, 1933, in Lexington, NC, he was the son of the late Jeter Edward Johnson and Elizabeth Davis Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ann Johnson, daughter Shawanda Duffield, son‑in‑law Barry Duffield, one sister, four brothers, and a grandson.

Charles grew up in a family marked by service and sacrifice. After the loss of his brother Richard in World War II, he felt a deep calling to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Navy. During his service, he was stationed abroad and served during both the Korean War and the Bay of Pigs. He had hoped to build a lifelong career in the Navy, but his service was cut short when he was honorably discharged after losing his sight due to a rare genetic eye disorder, Macular Dystrophy.

On December 12, 1959, Charles married Ann Carol “Flossie” McCarn, and together they returned to Thomasville to build a life rooted in love, resilience, and hard work. Over the years, Charles held a variety of jobs—from working in a veneer mill, to running his own store, to assisting a close friend with furniture delivery. No matter the role, he approached every task with dedication and quiet strength. Among his family and friends, he was known for his quick wit, unique ability to call his loved ones with original nicknames and talent for cooking, especially making soups that you would beg him to make again.

He leaves behind a family he loved: his son Scott Johnson of Lexington; daughter Krystal Johnson and Jerry Easter of Lexington; and daughter Katrinka Johnson and her wife Janet Gartrell‑Johnson of Rolesville.

Charles is also survived by four grandchildren—Adam Johnson and wife Ashley, Brandi Duffield and Brian Dupre, Jeremiah Johnson and Dana Worley, and Cody Duffield and wife Katie—and seven great‑grandchildren: Zachary VanDyke, Madison Johnson, David Duffield, Morgan Johnson, Mollie Duffield, McKenley Johnson, and Easton Johnson.

A joint funeral service honoring Charles, his daughter Shawanda, and her husband Barry Duffield, will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville. Military burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff who provided unconditional loving care at Pennybyrn Mayfield of High Point and Authocare Collective Hospice in Greensboro.
