Mrs. Colleen Evelyn Spainhour Thacker passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at Novant Kernersville Medical Center on June 17, 2020. Colleen lived gracefully for 97 wonderful years.
She was born at home April 9, 1923 to CD and Treva Hine Spainhour of Davidson County. Colleen was the second of five siblings. As a young girl she worked with her family on their tobacco farm. After graduating Wallburg High School she followed her older sister to Washington DC where she worked as a beautician in a high profile shop near the White House. Her shop served many celebrities and government officials of the era.
It was there she met the love of her life, Odie. They married and raised her first daughter there. Her father convinced the young family to move back to Davidson County where she resided the rest of her life.
Colleen is survived by her daughter, Janet of High Point, and more recently of the home; grandson TJ Thayer and wife Erin of Franklinville, NC; granddaughter Christy Thayer of Boone; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Thayer and Nathanael Thayer, who were a joy to her; sister, Carol Kennedy of Pinehurst, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Colleen was predeceased by her parents, husband, Odie; daughter, Teresa Thayer; and grandson, Paul Thayer. Other family members preceding her are: sisters, Frances Portaro and Peggy Gray and brother, Bruce Spainhour. Colleen enjoyed her yard, garden, community sewing groups, and her church family. Her telephone friends were a comfort in her final days.
A graveside service will be held Monday, June 22, 2020 at 10:00 AM in Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Colleen will lie in repose at the JC Green and Sons Funeral Home in Winston-Salem from 2-5 PM on Sunday, June 21, 2020.
