Colon Brown Cheek Obituary
Mr. Colon Brown Cheek, 93, a resident of Kernersville, passed away Thursday morning, July 30, 2026 at the NC Veteran’s Home in Kernersville, NC. Colon was born December 3, 1932, in Randolph County, NC to the late Henry Leroy “Roy” Cheek and Flossie Brown Cheek. Colon proudly served his country in the United States Army and was deployed to Germany. He was a dedicated and nurturing man, who helped his family through many hardships in his youth. On November 9, 1962, he married the love of his life, Iona Johnson Cheek and they shared 63 years of marriage as husband and wife. He was a self-employed general contractor and helped many folks through his abilities and kindness. He was a long-time member of Zion Church in Thomasville, where he cheerfully served in many capacities, such as usher and the 60 Plus Club. Colon drove the bus for their trips and relished being the “Captain” and the fellowship with the other members. He enjoyed many sports – basically anything involving a ball and coached several Little League teams. Colon will be remembered as an even-tempered man, welcoming and kind, and most importantly, he was a “giver – not a taker”. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend to many. Colon never met a stranger and loved to share the love of Jesus.
In addition to his parents, Colon is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Shana Tenell Johnson.
Surviving is his wife, Iona Cheek of the NC Veteran’s Home in Kernersville; his son, Gerald Ronald “Ronnie” Cheek and fiancé Gail of Thomasville; his three brothers, Carlton Cheek of Asheboro, Edward Cheek and wife Rebecca of Coleridge and Charles Cheek and wife Jean of Greensboro; and his great granddaughter, Ziva McKinzie Johnson.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 2, 2026 at Zion Church, 130 Hasty School Road, Thomasville, NC, with Reverend Donnie Thompson and Pastor Josh Sands officiating. The family will greet friends beginning at 2:00 PM at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors
