Daniel Bates Obituary

With heavy hearts and fond memories, we bid farewell to our beloved son and brother Daniel Bates, who departed from this world peacefully on Thursday morning at the youthful age of 35. Daniel's journey began on April 30, 1988, and from that moment on, he lived life with boundless enthusiasm and unending humor that touched the lives and souls of all who knew him.

Daniel’s endless joy was matched only by his brilliant mind. After attaining his Master’s Degree from Elon University, he joined Microban International as a senior innovation chemist specializing in all-natural organic chemistry, where he displayed a knack for approaching complex problems from multiple angles. Daniel readily saw pathways that few others could, and with determination and diligence he routinely broke down seemingly insurmountable obstacles with deceptively simple solutions. His talent for innovation earned him numerous accolades from his colleagues, classmates, and other peers; in addition, he has authored multiple patents, published in several scientific journals, and made numerous discoveries that have never before existed in his entire field.

With his ability to light up every room he entered; Daniel made friends easily. Throughout college and his professional life, he would easily leave smiles in his wake with his sharp wit and dry sense of humor. Though his resplendent life was cut all-too-short, Daniel made the most of it, embarking on countless adventures with his many close friends. Daniel was a fixture at numerous road trips, parties, weddings, baby showers, parades, and many other events that allowed those near and dear to him to share in his continual celebration of life itself.

Above all, Daniel’s greatest loves were his closest family, his four brothers, Timothy Bates, Jr., Ryan Bates, Michael Bates, and Chris Wilson; and sister, Whitney Lanier (Alan); his doting parents, father, Timothy J. Bates, Sr. (Jennifer) and mother, Janet Sourek Bates; grandmother, Sharon Bates; nephews, Wilson and James Lanier; his beloved furry friend, Lunchbox; numerous cousins; and his loving fiancé, Michael Buckland. Every decision he made, every dream and plan he had for the future, were made with his familial connections in mind and how he could be the kindest and most thoughtful son, brother, cousin, friend, nephew and partner that he possibly could.

While Daniel may have left this world far too soon, the countless hearts and minds he touched and inspired along his journey will continue to carry his spirit with them and ensure he lives on. As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate the vibrant and accomplished life he lived, and the depth to which he impacted the lives of all who knew him.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at J.C. Green and Sons Wallburg Chapel.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times at his father's home, 218 Winged Foot Court, Winston-Salem.
