David Austin Conrad, 103, died peacefully on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Piedmont Crossing, Thomasville. Austin was born on January 16, 1922 in Davidson County, NC to Hattie Dillon and Henry Estes Conrad and was a lifelong resident of Thomasville. On April 12, 1946, he married Mildred Harris who died in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Edith Fowler and Lillian Skeen, brother, Glenn Conrad, and nieces, Betsy Armfield (born on his birthday in 1930) and Rachael Armentrout. Austin was drafted into the US Army in September,1942. He served as a medic in Germany and the European theater until after WWII ended in April, 1945. He was discharged in February,1946. Austin moved to Piedmont Crossing in 2018 and expressed many times that he was not old enough to be there. He finally relinquished his car at the age of 100. He became an ambassador at Piedmont and was fondly referred to as "the mayor". He loved talking with the residents and staff and sharing stories. Austin was very proud and humbled to have a biography "A Century of Yesterdays", written about his life and military WWII experiences by Jim Broos. He was definitely a member of the "Greatest Generation". Austin loved to stay busy and work was his answer. He owned and operated Davidson Dairy (Sealtest Milk Distributor) in Thomasville until 1973. Afterwards, he worked with Lexington Dairies and Thomasville Furniture Industries until he was 88 years old and always felt that was too young to retire. He was an active and lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church. He served on the Church Council (President at one time), Evangelism Committee, L-Men, Youth Counselor, choir and other committees. Austin is survived by daughter, Sharon Sink (Larry) and son, Eddie Conrad (Kathy), grandsons, Corie Sink (Teresa) Jacksonville, FL and Brennan "Bo" Sink (Jescena) High Point, step grandchildren, Todd (Lauren) Jargowsky, Jameson Jargowsky and Shawn Winfrey (Brian). Great grandchildren are Lillie Loggins (Joshua), Allison Sink, Carson Sink and Dylan Sink. Step great grandchildren are Matthew Jargowsky, Lila Jargowsky, Dylan Jargowsky, and twins, Jacob and Joseph Winfrey.
A celebration of life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 115 Unity St, Thomasville on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 1:30 p.m with Rev. Gina Schaefer, Rev. Craig Saltzer, and Rev. Cassie Overcash officiating.. Interment with military rites provided by the N.C. Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Davidson County Honor Guard will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 7, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, Thomasville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace Lutheran Church (Pay It Forward Fund), 115 Unity Street, Thomasville 27360; Hospice of Davidson County, 200 Hospice Way, Lexington 27292, or Piedmont Crossing, 100 Hedrick Dr, Thomasville 27360.
