Dorothy Thomas Sexton of Wallburg, North Carolina died after a prolonged illness on Sunday July 5, 2020 at the age of 92. She is survived by her five daughters: Rosalyn Proctor of Greensboro, North Carolina, Iris Angela Thayer of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Camellia Gurley of Orlando, Florida, Marsha Sexton of Greensboro, North Carolina and Jessie Mae Sexton of Thomasville, North Carolina; along with four grandchildren: Candace Ham of Cornelius, North Carolina, Jared Proctor of Cornelius, North Carolina., Cory Thayer of Austin, Texas and Elizabeth Gurley of Charleston, South Carolina; five great-grandchildren: Connor, Ella and Spencer Ham and Adie and Preston Proctor, all of Cornelius, North Carolina and one sister, Elizabeth Hill of Snow Hill, NC. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband, Edgar Leon Sexton and three sisters, Margie Hill, Vera Dupree, and Carol Thomas.
Dorothy received her Batchelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from East Carolina University and taught for over 35 years. The majority of her teaching career was spent as a first-grade teacher at Wallburg Elementary School. Dorothy cherished her family and church community at Wallburg Baptist along with the Wallburg Community at large. After her retirement from teaching she enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting.
There will be a graveside service at Wallburg Baptist Church Cemetery on Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 10:00 AM officiated by Pastor Brandon Wolfe. There will not be a visitation but Mrs. Sexton will lie in repose on Wednesday afternoon at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. NC Hwy 109, Winston-Salem for those that would like to pay their respects. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness for North Carolina, 309 W.
