Eunice Virginia Toney Jarrell was born on February 8, 1935, in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, to Clyde Toney and Pansy Mae Gragg Toney. She was the youngest of five children. The two boys were outnumbered with the arrival of Eunice, as the brothers were tasked with dealing with three sisters. Sadly, the family lost their mother when she passed away at the young age of twenty-eight years old, leaving their dad with the heavy burden of raising young children alone. It was too much for one parent so he made the difficult decision to allow Baptist Children's Home of North Carolina to raise Eunice, and her sister, Thelma, while Dorothy got married, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and Ralph pursued a career in music.
During Eunice's time at BCH of NC, she attended Thomasville City Schools, where she excelled in basketball and academics. She told everyone she knew that the most important thing she ever learned from living there was to love Jesus! The home took a bus load of children to see a Tent Revival that was held by the Reverend Billy Graham. She said that night changed the course of her life and she followed Jesus for the rest of it. You never met her without her telling you what Jesus did for her and what He could also do for you.
Mom met Dad, while he and his dad were building the Archway to BCH of NC. She was 17, beautiful, and vivacious, and when she saw dad, that was it! They were married and had two children together, Randy Leon Hedrick, born October 15, 1956, and Vickie Dianna Hedrick, born March 21, 1958. They eventually divorced, and Mom gave birth to another son, Paul, born on December 9, 1964. She did the most lovable and selfless thing by giving him up for adoption to a Christian family that provided for him and loved him dearly. Paul reconciled with mom several years ago and continues to have a very close relationship with his sister, Vickie.
Mom's heart was always in the right place with everyone she met. She planted flowers for her neighbors. She took food to the homebound and shut-ins. She gave away her own clothes to people who needed them. But next to her love for her Lord and Savior, was her love for all animals! She stated that she hoped that God would give her the job of loving every animal in Heaven!
She was preceded in death by all her siblings, her husband, Sam Jarrell, whom she grew up with at BCH of NC. She married Sam in 1996 and moved to Lakeland, Florida with him. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kimberly Lauren Norton, who passed away in 2022.
Mom quoted Romans 10: 9-10 on a regular basis. "If you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
Mom, Memaw, and Great-grandma, you left us on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025, at the age of 90, and while it hurt so much to think of you passing on such a special holiday, the hurt turned to pure joy as we all realized that you got what you have longed for your entire life, and that was to go home to your Savior forever!
With Love,
Your Family
