A sweet soul was welcomed into heaven.
Evelyn Marie Wingfield Buchanan was welcomed safely into the arms of God on August 6, 2025. The daughter of the late Isaac Jones and Jeanette Louise Wingfield, Evelyn was also preceded in death by her two older brothers, Kenneth and Larry Wingfield, and her husband, Wayne Buchanan.
Those left behind to mourn her loss include her daughter, Robin Knight (Dany); her husband, Gray Spillman and cherished Spillman family; stepdaughter, Denene Jackson (Rodney); many precious step-grand and great-grandchildren; deeply beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins; many dear and close friends; and her brother and sister in Christ, R.L. and Betty Jo Hill.
Evelyn was born in Virginia and later moved with her family to North Carolina. She was a talented lifelong artist, winning several awards for her creativity. Gifted in school, she placed in 12th-grade math and reading while still in 9th grade. After meeting her husband Wayne, they welcomed their daughter Robin in 1986.
Evelyn worked at the North State Telephone Company for over 30 years, retiring in 2005 and maintaining connection with all her beloved coworkers. Evelyn was a dear friend and a source of support to many, always sending cards, making phone calls, and letting others know she was there for them. She loved to draw and paint, but especially to garden. Being outside was truly her favorite thing! She was also an avid people-watcher who enjoyed seeing busy families as they went about their day. She often joked, “One day, be sure to include in my obituary that I was an avid people-watcher!”
Her family knew well that she had a remarkable talent for visualizing roads in her mind, knowing the exact travel time and mileage for each one. She absolutely loved the challenge of learning a new road and took pride in never needing a GPS!
During her formative years, she was a member of the Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Stuart, Virginia. She later joined Christian Cathedral in Thomasville, where she and her family enjoyed many years of worship and fellowship, and eventually became a member of First Christian Church of Clemmons. Evelyn was both a deeply religious and spiritually-gifted daughter of Christ.
She met her husband Gray in 2015 while ballroom dancing. The two married and shared a decade of wonderful memories traveling, dancing, and even taking their first international cruise. They cherished those moments and truly felt the Lord brought them together.
Evelyn was spontaneous and fun, always ready with a camera to capture the moment! The last year of her life was fraught with much suffering, as she struggled with diabetes, cancer, and the unforgiving effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
There was truly no one quite like Evelyn Marie, and her memory will live on in all those with whom she loved and cherished.
The viewing will be Sunday Aug 10th, 5-7PM at J.C. Green & Sons in Thomasville. Her funeral will be held the following Monday on the 11th, at 2PM also at J.C. Green & Sons in the chapel location. Burial will be held directly after at Holly Hill Memorial Cemetery.
“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” Isaiah 40:31
