George "Steve" Roberts Obituary

George Stephan “Steve” Roberts, 74, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away on November 18, 2025, due to complications from a stroke. His departure leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, yet his legacy of humor, kindness, service, and unwavering devotion will continue to guide them.

Born on July 20, 1951 in Wilmington, NC, Steve was the beloved son of George L. Roberts and Barbara Bledsoe Roberts. Raised on the “Southside” of Winston-Salem, he was a true “Southsider.” He graduated from Parkland High School in 1969 and will forever be a Mustang. Steve later earned his Associate Degree from Miami-Dade School of Mortuary Science and a Bachelor of Science from High Point University.

In 1971, Steve married the love of his life, Mary, in Ocala, FL. Their 54-year marriage has been a testament to commitment, partnership, and love. Together, they raised two sons who were the pride of his life: Chad Roberts (Kimmy) and Devin Roberts (Ashley). His three grandchildren, Sam, Ella, and Addy, brought him immense pleasure and he cherished every moment spent as "Pappy.”

He is also survived by his sisters Colleen Adair (Billy), Robin Powell (Dave), his brother John “Art” Roberts (Shirley), his sister-in-law Kay Green (Kerry), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were touched by his warmth and humor.

Steve built a life grounded in hard work and service. He began his career in the funeral business as a licensed embalmer and funeral director in 1970 returning to Winston-Salem in 1979. He worked at Douglas Battery for nearly a decade before spending more than 20 years as a Manufacturer’s Representative with Hile Associates, where he served as National Sales Manager and represented manufacturers throughout the Southeast with skill and integrity. He later returned to his roots, retiring as a Funeral Director from JC Green and Sons after two decades of compassionate service to families during their hardest moments.

Deeply committed to his faith, Steve was a devoted member of New Mount Vernon United Methodist Church for 46 years. He served as a Methodist Man, Sunday School teacher for 45 years, choir member, and faithful volunteer in numerous ministries. His commitment to service extended well beyond the church walls. He was active in the Willow Creek Rotary Club, Meals on Wheels, Waughtown Cemetery, served as a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 207, and was a member of Masonic Lodge #214 in Thomasville.

Steve loved to travel, proudly visiting all 50 states. He was a dedicated NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt and Kyle “Rowdy” Busch, and he loved sharing a good story, a hearty laugh, and a warm hug with anyone he met.

Above all, Steve Roberts was a man defined by love. He was the funniest, kindest, and hardest-working husband and father anyone could hope to meet. He loved deeply, laughed loudly, and gave generously of his time, talents, and heart. Those who knew him are better for it and his spirit will continue to inspire the countless lives he touched.

A life well-lived, a man well-loved, Steve Roberts will be profoundly missed.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Silas Creek Rehabilitation Center and Novant Forsyth Medical Center ICU for their compassion and care during his time there.
