Herman "Gene" Shaw Obituary

Mr. Herman Eugene "Gene" Shaw, 88, passed away peacefully with his wife, Pat, by his side on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 7:59am at the Hospice Home in High Point.

Gene was born on Thursday, October 22, 1936 in Farmer, NC to his parents, Lonnie Free Shaw and Lois Audrey Scarlett Shaw. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his younger brother, Harold Frank Shaw.

Gene served his country proudly first in the National Guard from February 23, 1953- April 22, 1957 and then in the United States Air Force serving from April 23, 1957- April 10, 1961 in Okinawa, Japan where he was Honorably Discharged.

Gene was a hard worker from his early days working at Klopman Mills in Asheboro and then at Thomasville Furniture Industries in the Warehouse. He decided to retire in 1999 to enjoy refinishing furniture and bringing old wood back to life, fishing for bream on little black flies, gardening and sharing the fruits of his labor with many, and antique collecting especially Ball jars.

As a member of Rich Fork Baptist Church and the Victory Fellowship Sunday School class, he was always happy to serve as a greeter. He loved shaking hands and giving hugs to make everyone feel welcome. Sometimes he would pull a piece of candy from his pocket to give the little ones. He was also a member of the Sunshine Gang.

The family left to cherish his memory are first, the love of his life, Patricia McIntosh Shaw of Thomasville; their daughter, Karen Crawford and her husband John Crawford of High Point; their son, Pete Shaw and his wife Tammy Shaw of Thomasville; their grandchildren Ashley Rose and her husband Dylan Rose of High Point, and Lisa Crawford of Dickson, Tennessee; their great grandchildren Aaron Triplett of Jamestown, Madison Triplett of Trinity, Arianna Perkins of High Point, Isabella Rose of High Point, Gabriella Rich of Lexington and Carter Rose of High Point; his sisters Mary Hill of Asheboro, Hilda Hester of Hampton, Va., Judith Surratt of Denton and Shirley Lambeth of Denton.

His family will miss him dearly but Gene should have been known as the Animal Whisperer. From the squirrel that set up his home in Gene's workshop for over a year and was so comfortable with Gene that he climbed up his pant leg at one point, to the rabbit that was requiring attention Gene decided to adopt and care for himself, to Gene's Grand-dogs Toto, Harley, Bella, Sadie and Macy that he petted and loved but nothing was as dear to Gene as his cats. Dolly, Smoky and Bo Duke will miss Gene as much as anyone will. Bo Duke is so attached to him that he impatiently sits in Gene's lap to be rubbed and brushed. This cat even will begin at bedtime at Gene's feet but by morning will have worked his way between Gene and Pat until he is actually resting one of his paws on Gene's cheek. Now that is pet adoration of a Daddy!

The family would like to send a special thank you to those who provided such wonderful care in Gene's final weeks - Dr. Durham Colohan, Dr Donald Brescia, Dr Ethan Yun, Dr Chima Ohadugha, the many nurses at High Point Regional and Thomasville Medical Center and the Hospice Home in High Point on Westchester Drive.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2025 at 3:30 PM at Rich Fork Baptist Church. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at the church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers a donation be made in Gene's memory to the Hospice Home in High Point.
