Hilda Kinney Byerly, age 85, a lifelong resident of Thomasville, NC was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. Hilda was born on March 11, 1940 in Thomasville. She was the daughter of Howard Saye Kinney and Tempie Clyde Foster Kinney. On April 15, 1961, she married her “most-sweetest of sweethearts”, Reginal O. Byerly. They were married 37 years. Reggie preceded her in death in 1998. Hilda was a dedicated employee with North Carolina National Bank in Thomasville until she retired. She then took a position at Commercial Carving in Thomasville and worked into her second retirement. Later in life, she worked part-time at the Side Street Deli in the Thomasville Emporium building. Hilda was a lifelong member of Carolina Memorial Baptist Church, where she served as church clerk. She was actively involved in Sunday School, the choir, and she took care of many babies and toddlers in the nursery. She developed a reputation for making the best chocolate pies for church functions, always bringing one to serve and one to stash away for the kitchen crew to share.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Hilda was preceded in death by her brother, Herman Kinney; her sisters, Mildred K. Brinkley, Donnie K. Swaney and Loretta K. Ogden; her niece, Linda Brinkley; and her nephews, Richard Brinkley and Steve Swaney.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Neal Byerly and wife Sharon of Lexington, NC; her daughter, Sheila Byerly Sumner of Denton, NC; granddaughters, Taylor Everhart (Jonathan) and Alexis Sumner (Alex Burkhart): grandson, Thomas Kozik (Morgan); great granddaughters, Elyse Kozik and Lenox Kozik; her niece, Teresa Lowe; her nephew, Doug Brinkley: her friend and companion, Dwain Staley.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Tim Landreth and Rev. Stuart White officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM.
