Jack Metcalf, born September 4, 1935, died on September 3, 2023.  Born in Newport Tennessee, he was the son of Levi and Artel Metcalf.  They moved to Bridgeton, NJ when he was young and he spent most of his childhood there, graduating from Bridgeton High School in 1955.

He was a mechanic for Owens-Illinois for 37 years and moved with his wife and kids to Winston-Salem, NC in 1974 due to a transfer with his job.  Since being forced to retire due to immobility in his left knee in 1992, Jack has been a cancer survivor, a stroke survivor, and had been driving himself to dialysis 3 days per week for the last five years up until February of this year, when he fell and broke his hip.  “The Man with Nine Lives” was a hero, a role model, and a true fighter up until the end.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father; as well as his siblings Lloyd, Pearl, Irene, Stella, and Ernie.  He is survived by his wife Betty Metcalf; his sister Carolyn Smith; his brother Carl Metcalf; his children John Metcalf, Cindy Green, Dorin Metcalf (ex-wife Cindy Metcalf), Jane Grant-Damminger, Jack Metcalf Jr, Gary Metcalf, Faith Gentry (husband Brandon Gentry), and Brandon Metcalf (wife Amanda Metcalf); his grandchildren Mahlon, James, Brittney, Tyler, Megan, Emma, and 5 other grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will hold a private celebration of life.  We ask visits be limited to family only and any condolences be sent via Messenger or texts.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to either plant a tree in his honor (as he loved sitting in the shade), or send donations to the American Kidney Fund or Hospice of the Piedmont (in High Point, NC).
