Janice McElroy Obituary

Mrs. Janice Morton McElroy, 80, a resident of Lexington, passed away on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at her home, surrounded by her family.  She was born on July 17, 1945 in Randolph County to her parents, the late Earl Morton and Aileen McKnight Morton.  Janice was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church in Silver Valley and planned many events.  She was very active in the church and was always available to assist the pastor when he needed help. Janice also liked to cook and provide food for other folks.  She worked at Maro Hosiery Mill, Adam Millis, Sara Lee Hanes Brand and later owned Comfort Furniture in Thomasville. Janice enjoyed watching NASCAR, pulled for Jeff Gordon and also was an active Duke fan. 

In addition to her parents, Janice is preceded in death by both of her husbands, Johnny McElroy and Jerry Brown. 

Surviving is her son, Johnny “Shotty” McElroy and wife Kim of Lexington; two daughters, Robin McElroy Leonard of Asheboro and Cindy McElroy and Brian of High Point; eight grandchildren, Ashley Springs, Kenneth Paul Leonard, Courtney McAdams and husband Chris, Cameron Thompson, Brett McElroy and fiancé Emily, John Leonard and wife Beth, Mattie Leonard, Gracie Leonard; four great-grandchildren, Hunter Morgan, Caiden McAdams, Corbin McAdams, Claire McAdams.  Janice will be dearly missed by her entire family.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Community Baptist Church in Silver Valley, with Rev. Brian Workman officiating. No formal visitation will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Community Hope Mission for Men 240 Tony Loflin Drive, Lexington, NC 27292.
