Jimmy James Hutchins Obituary
Mr. Jimmy James Hutchins, 83, of the Wallburg Community, passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 while at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born on Tuesday, February 23, 1943 in Forsyth County, a son of the late Carl Eugene and Roberta Tuttle Hutchins. Jimmy graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1962. During school he began working for Dewey’s Bakery. After graduation, he worked for the City of Winston-Salem until he joined the military. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, including 2 years of active duty (1964-1966), as part of the 2nd Armored Division (“Hell on Wheels”) at Fort Hood, Texas. Jimmy was honorably discharged in 1970. After his military service, he worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as a cigarette machine operator while attending Forsyth Technical College, where he completed coursework in HVAC and electrical systems. He later transitioned to HVAC operation, a career he pursued for 33 years until retiring at age 54.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; a baby daughter; sisters, Polly Hutchins and Brenda Pinnix; father and mother-in-law, Hillard and Pauline Scarlett; and brothers-in-law, Milton Scarlett and Edwin Pinnix.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Ruby Scarlett Hutchins; their daughter, Katherine Hutchins; son, David Hutchins; and granddaughter, Emily Gordon, all of Kernersville, NC. Jimmy was a devoted supporter of Katherine, David, and Emily throughout their school years and took great pride in seeing each of them graduate from college and prosper in their careers. He also leaves a sister, Susan Matthews (James); brother-in-law, Bill Scarlett (Janet); sister-in-law, Susan Scarlett; many nephews and nieces; and adored cat, Sugar.
A man who lived life fully, Jimmy enjoyed traveling, golfing (he was a professional “divot digger”), playing Bingo, dressing as Santa Claus for family Christmas parties, spending time with old friends and hanging out with “the gang” at Country Kitchen/Cagney’s in Midway. Even as Vascular Dementia limited his mobility in later years, he remained surrounded by love and care. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who cared for him, especially Hospice.
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, May 18, 2026 at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, Wallburg Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home, beginning at 6:00 PM, 10301 N. NC Hwy 109, Winston-Salem, NC.
