Joann Slate Mitchell Obituary

Mrs. Joann Slate Mitchell, 89, of Thomasville, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at her home.  She was born on March 29, 1934 in Guilford County, High Point, NC to Charles Alexander Slate and Annie Catherine Basinger Slate.  She retired in 2016 at the age of 82 from the Eye Care Clinic and was a very active member, while her health permitted, of First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Lee Mitchell on November 16, 2006, whom she married on January 17, 1954; her son, Charles Gordon “Pete” Mitchell; her brothers, Charles Slate and Donald Slate; and her sisters, Shirley Cashion and Evelyn Harrington.

Surviving are her two sons, Bob Lee Mitchell, II and wife Pattie of Trinity and Jon Randal “Randy” Mitchell and wife Peggy of Lexington; three grandchildren, Joanna Hollifield and husband Phillip, Jonathan Mitchell and wife Neta, and Nikki McNeil; eight great-grandchildren, Ezra, Vance, Judah, Shiloh, Jordan, Evan, Shea, and Weston; one great-great grandchild, Isaiah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Thomasville with Rev. Susanne Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the church. A private inurnment will take place at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 21 Randolph St. Thomasville, NC 27360.
