Joe Greeson Obituary

Joe David Greeson was born on September 24, 1940 to David Clyde and Gaitha Isley Greeson in Burlington, North Carolina. He graduated from E.M. Holt School in Alamance County, and furthered his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1962.

For 18 years, he worked as a pharmacist and the store manager of Mann Drug before establishing The Medicine Shoppe in Thomasville. Later, the name was changed to Thomasville Pharmacy. Joe deeply loved and appreciated his customers, whom he considered friends. No matter what was going on or how busy the pharmacy, he always took time for others… fully directing his attention and care to the person in front of him. Joe was a faithful member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Thomasville. In previous years, he was a member of the Thomasville Jaycees, the N.C. Wildlife Hunt Club, and continued his membership with the Thomasville Buck Club.

Additionally, during his life, he served on the Boards of Hospice of Davidson County, Davidson County Health Department, Uwharrie District of Boy Scouts, United Way of Davidson County, Peoples Savings and Loan, and BB&T of Davidson County.

His favorite hobby was white-water kayaking. He could still roll a kayak at the age of 85. Joe paddled most of the rivers in Western North Carolina as well as other rivers like the Gauley and the New River in West Virginia. He also had fond memories of rafting 101 miles on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

Along with his beloved wife, Barbara, Joe traveled to 35 foreign countries, experiencing different cultures and seeing many wonderful sites. He was a life-long student who loved reading and taking on-line courses on a wide range of subjects.

One of the best days of his life was on August 12, 1962, when he married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Gilley, who survives him. Also surviving him are his children: David Craig (Heidi) of Mount Pleasant, Amy Laverne (Peggy) of High Point, and Barry Todd (Jane) of Winston-Salem. Grandchildren: Alex (Chase), Ben, Erika (Jimmy), and Abby. Great grandchild: Isley. And his sisters: Sue Bowden and Glenda Morton.

Joe loved the outdoors and one of his favorite quotes was by Henry David Thoreau: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I come to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Visitation will be Monday, April 6th from 6-8pm at J.C. Greens Funeral Home in Thomasville. Service will be on Tuesday, April 7th at 1pm at Memorial United Methodist Church, 101 Randolph Street, in Thomasville. Reception to follow. The family will have a private burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Thomasville Memorial United Methodist Church or to the Hinkle Hospice House of Davidson County: Joe D. Greeson Water Feature
