Mrs. Lois “Evelyn” Beck Coggins, 95, a lifelong resident of Thomasville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 13, 2025 at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville. Born on May 17, 1930, in Davidson County, she was the daughter of the late John Obadiah Beck and Virgie Sechrist Beck.
Evelyn worked for many years at Kayby Mills in Thomasville before retiring. Quiet, kind, and unfailingly considerate, she had a gentle spirit and a deep desire to care for those around her. She will be fondly remembered for her steadfast love of family and friends and especially for the joy she found in her grandchildren. Evelyn cherished simple pleasures—flowers (particularly orchids), cardinals and bluebirds, hot chocolate, visits to the beauty shop, and time spent with her family.
On September 5, 1964, Evelyn married Elmer Alexander Coggins Jr., whom she lovingly cared for until his passing in September 2019. Their marriage of 55 years was marked by devotion and companionship. In her later years, Evelyn was faithfully cared for by her children and the compassionate staff of Piedmont Crossing. Before her health declined, she attended Bethel Global Methodist Church in Thomasville.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Dalton Welborn Sr.; her brother, Lloyd Clarence Beck; her sister, Bernice Beck Curry; and her niece, Cathy Saunders.
She is survived by her three children, Earl Dalton Welborn Jr. (Cindy) and Carole Welborn Wiggs (Mitchell), both of High Point and Kimberly Coggins Johnson (Eric) of Thomasville. She also leaves behind three grandchildren, Bryan Wiggs (Jill), Chad Welborn, and Kathryn Simons (Philip) and her great-grandchild, Emma Welborn. Also surviving are her niece, Brenda Byrd (Sammy) of Thomasville; her nephews, L.C. Beck (Elizabeth) and Robert Beck, both of Thomasville, along with eight great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM at the J.C. Green and Sons Chapel in Thomasville with Rev. Chuck Garner and Rev. Rueben Rinker officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:45 PM at the funeral home.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Piedmont Crossing for their compassion and exceptional care of Evelyn. They would also like to thank the many friends and family of the 200 Hall for their kindness and support. Memorials may be made to Piedmont Crossing, 100 Hedrick Drive, Thomasville, NC 27360, or Bethel Global Methodist Church, 508 Fisher Ferry Street, Thomasville, NC 27360.
