Louise Hiatt Burton Obituary

Mrs. Louise Hiatt Burton, 96, passed away on January 22, 2023 unexpectedly at her home. A resident of Thomasville, NC all her life, she was born March 14, 1926 to J Will and Elizabeth Payne Hiatt and a large farm family. In October, 1948, she married her love, Clayton Veach Burton of Thomasville. After seventeen years of marriage, they welcomed a little girl, Jennifer Louise, to the family. Unfortunately, Clayton died in May 1977. After completing the Secretarial Program at the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, NC, Louise worked for Western Electric (which would become AT&T) for 40 years, advancing to the position of secretary to the director of the NC Works Group and retiring in May 1987. In retirement, Louise loved doing crocheting and knitting projects, as well as quilting. She also was a volunteer in the surgical waiting room of Thomasville Medical Center for a number of years. As a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church since her marriage in 1948, she held various positions, including treasurer for over 30 years, United Methodist Women as member and president, trustees committee, and various other positions. She loved watching college basketball (the Tarheels, of course), a sport she played in high school. She loved to travel and, with her daughter as her companion, saw most of the United States, and several countries in Europe and the Middle East. With the advent of her daughter’s marriage, Louise had a sidekick who would add to her adventures, even at her age. With Eric, she rode on an ATV, in a side by side feeding deer and checking over the farm, and then getting into a pool after 70 years of fear to enjoy floating and having fun with family. Her next adventure would be a helicopter ride over Myrtle Beach! In addition to her husband and her parents, Louise was predeceased by her siblings, Wade Hiatt, Grace Fink, Rufus Hiatt, Pauline Hiatt, Dorothy Dunn, Mabel Hilton, and Charles Hiatt. Louise is survived by her daughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Eric Lineberry; three siblings, William Hiatt, Mary Frances (husband Max) Johnson, and Peggy (husband Randall) Shuler; along with a plethora of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and beyond.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2023 at 11:00 am at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 1393 Hasty School Rd, Thomasville, NC, with Rev. John Stein and Rev. Keys Pendleton officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am in the Kennedy Christian Life Center prior to the service. The family will also receive visitors at her home in the days prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 1049, Thomasville, NC 27360. Online condolences may be sent to www.jcgreenandsons.com.
