Mr. Lucas “Luke” Jefferson Doby, 40, of Thomasville passed away on June 7, 2021 at Thomasville Medical Center.
Luke was born May 14, 1981 to John Brondell Doby and Carol Cox Doby in High Point. As a child, he was a member and active in Bethel UMC in Thomasville. He attended Fairgrove Elementary, Brown Middle, and graduated from East Davidson High School in 1999. As a son of a coach, he grew up loving football. Luke was a tailback for East Davidson’s football team. In his senior year, he scored more touchdowns than any other player in Davidson County during the regular season. He was voted All-Conference and All-County that year. He “walked-on” the next year at Appalachian State and played a valuable role on the practice team.
Luke always enjoyed just “hanging out” and interacting with family and friends. He especially loved being at the beach where he enjoyed just looking at the ocean and never ceased to be amazed at the beauty and power of it. One of Luke’s favorite pastimes was exploring and making trails in the woods with his much-loved canine companion “Runt.” This treasured friendship was blessed to last almost 20 years.
Luke was a very compassionate, loving person and was particularly saddened and concerned for the hungry. For Luke’s family and others who knew him well, he will be missed beyond measure.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Doby; maternal grandmother, Gladys Cox “Nannie”; brother Dean Doby; sister Myra Doby; special uncle and aunt, Lester and Marie Hicks. Surviving is his mother, Carol Cox Doby of Thomasville; two brothers, Gary Doby of Thomasville, Mike Doby (Dawn) of Lexington; two uncles, Hiram Cox and Tommy Cox, both of North Wilkesboro; special cousins, Connie Cox and Chuck Cox, both of North Wilkesboro; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Also surviving is his beloved dog, “Angel,” who hardly ever left his side the past three years.
