Margie Virginia Payne Pitts Obituary

Margie Payne Pitts, 92, of Thomasville, North Carolina, passed away on March 28, 2026 at Hospice Home in Raleigh, NC. She was born on March 4, 1934, in Davidson County, NC to Clyde Glenn Payne and Vera Magdelene Moore Payne.  She was a 1952 graduate of Hasty High School and graduated from UNC Women’s College in 1956. She was a teacher for 33 years at Thomasville, Burlington, and Wallburg Elementary schools.

She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Church, the Willing Worker’s Sunday School Class, the Mt. Pleasant Women.  She served as treasurer for the Wallburg Fire Department and the Wallburg Recreational Center. Margie also enjoyed traveling and had the joy of visiting all 50 states.
She loved spending time at the beach and in the mountains with her sisters, brother, nephews, nieces and their families. In her free time Margie loved working in her flowerbeds, baking her famous pound cake, playing solitaire on the computer and solving the daily Sudoku in the newspaper.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kirby Pitts and her brother Dale Payne and sisters Ruby Allred and Martha Lou Hayworth. She is survived by her sister Shirley Johnson, her daughters, Lora Layton and her husband Donnie, Ellen Farrell and her husband Patrick, and Anita Janssen. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Adam Layton and family, Page Flannery and family, Allison Pike and her husband Tristan, Abby Farrell, Leo Janssen, Sophie Janssen, and Alex Janssen. 

A funeral service will be held for her Tuesday, March 31st, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Mount Pleasant Church in the sanctuary with Pastor Chris Clontz officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends immediately following the committal. In lieu of flowers the family asks memorials be made to Mount Pleasant Church FLC fund, 6516 Old Greensboro Rd Thomasville NC, 27360 or Hospice Home, 200 Hospice Circle Raleigh, NC 27607.
