Martha Ann (Westmoreland) Floyd Obituary

It is with grateful hearts for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Martha Ann Floyd, who passed away on August 1, 2026 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Martha Ann was a devoted wife, mother, sister, teacher, church member, and friend whose warmth touched generations of lives.

Martha Ann was born on July 14, 1942, in Thomasville, NC to the late Hoyt and Inez Westmoreland. Martha Ann attended the University of Georgia where she earned both her bachelor’s and master's degrees in agriculture and education, respectively. She lived in Texas briefly when her husband, Dr. James M. Floyd, Jr. was stationed at Dallas, TX. Returning to settle down in her hometown, Martha Ann completed a 32-year career at Thomasville High School, teaching biology and environmental science to countless students, many of whom represented multiple generations of Thomasville families.

Outside of teaching, Martha Ann embraced life with enthusiasm. She was accomplished in Middle Eastern dance and traveled to attend conventions, enjoyed performing with friends, and teaching others. She was a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church in Thomasville for more than 38 years, where she was devoted to her Sunday school class. She found great joy in opening her home to others and was known for her hospitality. Whether hosting family gatherings or visiting friends, she was always the last to sit down to dinner, making sure everyone else was attended to and comfortable.

One of Martha Ann’s treasured accomplishments was being crowned Miss Thomasville in 1959. She enjoyed reuniting with fellow titleholders and was recognized as the longest-living Miss Thomasville.

Martha Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Hoyt and Inez Westmoreland, and sister, Brenda Sue Leonard. She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, Dr. James M. Floyd, Jr.; her son, James Daniel Floyd and wife Amber of Oakland, Mississippi along with many extended family members, dear friends, former students, and church family who will deeply miss her.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 6, at 11:00 am at Liberty Baptist Church in Thomasville, with Rev. David Bowman officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park in Thomasville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, 225 Liberty Avenue, Thomasville, NC 27360.
