Mary Northington Obituary

Mrs. Mary Cobb Northington, 97, went to be with the Lord August 13, 2020. Mrs. Northington, a retired school teacher, was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She graduated from Bartow High School, Bartow, Georgia and Freeman Business College, Albany, Georgia. Most of her teaching career was with the Davidson County Schools where she was a teacher at Reeds and Denton Elementary Schools. Before becoming a teacher Mrs. Northington served as secretary to the Jefferson County Extension Agent, Louisville, Georgia, The Board of Education and Department of Social Services, Union County, Monroe, N.C. and as Secretary of Personnel with the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services, Charlotte, N.C. After her retirement, she was elected secretary and treasurer of the Holiday Shores on Lake Tillery Association where she served 10 years.

Her love of growing things provided the flowers for her ministry to shut-in and sick members of Main Street United Methodist Church, Albemarle, N.C. where she and her husband attended for twenty years after his retirement from active ministry. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women for 62 years. During her husband’s ministry to the United Methodist Church she was a faithful help-mate to him. She found her niche in hospitality as a ministry of the church. She served as a teacher, member of the choir, visitor and youth worker in many of the churches. Being active in Christian service brought her much joy but her greatest joy was being a mother to her six children. In 2004 the Northingtons moved to Thomasville, N.C. and attended Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church.

Mrs. Northington, the daughter of the late Lester Rogers and Hettie Glover Cobb was reared in Jefferson County, Georgia. She was the youngest of their eight children. She was also preceded in death by the love of her life for 72 years, Reverend James Northington, her beloved son Ralph William Northington (Vicky), son-in-law Ronnie Bozardt and beautiful great granddaughter Sarah Bozardt.

Surviving are her children Janice N. Bozardt of Charlotte; James A. Northington, Jr. (Nina) of Greensboro; Mary N. Beasley (Donnie) of Thomasville; Beth N. Evans (Kevin) of Gold Hill; and Sandi Northington of Thomasville; grandchildren Ronnie (Kathy) Bozardt, Allen (Melissa) Bozardt, Jamie Northington, Jeremy (Teresa) Northington, Chris (Christina) Northington, Matt (Kelby) Beasley, Mark (Jennifer) Beasley, Linley (Brandon) Coggins, Luke Evans, Callie McClanahan, Mike McClanahan, great grandchildren Caleb Bozardt, Emily (Cameron) Friday, Kris (Chelsey) Bozardt, Brandon Bozardt, Sophia Northington, Coltrane Northington, Joshua Northington, McKenzie Northington, Madison Northington, Beau Beasley, Benaiah Beasley, Avery Beasley, Ella Beasley, and Baby Coggins; great-great grandchild Rylee Bozardt; Farris Brantley, brother-in-law and many wonderful nieces and nephews also survive.

The celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, August 16. Visitation will begin at 2:00pm followed by a funeral service at 3:00 at Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church, Thomasville, N.C. Officiating will be Pastor Wilson Harris and Pastor Keith Carroll. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The service is open to the public, however, masks and social distancing are encouraged. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Wesleyan Church, Thomasville, N.C., or the college campus mission efforts of granddaughter Linley Coggins, with Cru, at UNCG. Donations can be made at www.give.cru.org/0885430
