Special thanks are extended to Vanessa Vernon and Melodee Mickey for their companionship, compassion and care.
Mary graduated from Allen Jay High School where she made lifelong friends she lovingly referred to as “the jaybird girls”. She then went on to college to pursue her passion for athletics and education. She played basketball at Guilford College and High Point College, where she earned her degree in Physical Education. Mary devoted her career to teaching and coaching, impacting countless students through her leadership, encouragement, and example both on and off the court.
She married the love of her life, William Thaddeus “Ghondie” Newton, and together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Their 56-year marriage was marked by devotion, generosity, and deep love.
Basketball remained a lifelong passion for Mary. She proudly played in the Senior Olympic basketball league as a member of the Silver Spirits, embodying her competitive spirit and love for the game. Outside the gym, Mary found joy in working in her yard, savoring a hot cup of coffee, and preparing home-cooked meals to share around the family table. She loved snow skiing, time spent at the beach and the lake, peaceful days at the mountain house, and never turned down a slice of chocolate pound cake.
Mary leaves behind a legacy defined by service, selflessness, and generosity. Above all else, she loved Jesus Christ with her whole heart and lived her life in a way that reflected His love to everyone she encountered. Her faith was not only spoken but lived daily, leaving an enduring example for her family and all who knew her.
Mary Adella Hendricks Newton will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered, but we live in great joy knowing she is with our Savior.
