Mary Lucille (Lucy) Ward Hege Obituary

Mary Lucille Ward Hege (Lucy) died peacefully at River Landing on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.  She was born in Thomasville on March 23, 1930 to Thomas Ward and Essie Mae Hedrick Ward.

Lucy graduated from Pilot High School in 1948, where she was elected May Queen.  At school, she met and later married classmate Ronald H. Hege in 1949.  After marriage, they moved to Boone and then to Greensboro.

In Greensboro, they raised 3 children. Ron had a career in sales and Lucy worked part time clerical positions as a receptionist, secretary, and bookkeeper.

Lucy was a lifelong member of the United Church of Christ faith, and enjoyed the fellowship of Peace Church for many years.  Her hobbies included volunteering, sewing, gardening, card games, traveling, and home decorating.

Lucy is survived by her brother, Wayne Ward and a cousin, Jerry Myers, both of Thomasville.  Also, her sister’s daughter, special niece, Diane Stovall of Myrtle Beach, and other Hege nieces and nephews.  Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Susan Kirschner (Ken) of Greensboro, Deatra Sellers (Charlie) of Blowing Rock/Pinehurst and Kevin Hege of Calabash.  She has two grandchildren, Ryan Wilcox (Hailey) of Santa Clarita, California and Heather Wilcox (Adam) of Durham; and 2 great-grandchildren, Lucas and Austin Wilcox in California.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Pilgrim Reformed Church Cemetery in Lexington.  In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to Peace United Church of Christ, 2714 W. Market St. Greensboro, NC 27405 or to the charity of one’s choice.  Finally, a heartfelt prayer or an act of kindness would energize Lucy’s wings and bring smiles to those who knew her.  The family expresses sincere appreciation to the many staff members at River Landing.
