Merle “Wayne” Smith, aka (Big Kahuna/Coot) of Mt.Ulla, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at his residence.
He was preceded in death by his mom and dad Ruby Smith and Burton Paul Smith, his three brothers, Reid, Winston, and Worthie Smith and his grandson Scotty Horne.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Smith; his three sisters, Quanita Poole of South Carolina, Hazel Bower and Mike of Troutman, Maxine Scagelione of Mooresville; two daughters, Kim Zeback (Mike) and Tracie Justice (Joseph); four grandkids, Curtis, Heather, Cory, Kayla and several great-grandkids.
Wayne was a well-loved man by many. He never met a stranger a day in his life. Wayne loved his family, friends, his dog (King) but most importantly he loved the Lord, his God. He was a die-hard Cowboys, Yankees, and Duke fan. He was a retired veteran and served in the United States Marine Corps. Before he got sick, he had a passion for bowling and golf.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Rockwell Baptist Church in Mooresville with Pastor Dwayne Barber officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
