Merzell Elizabeth Munday Collins, 94 of Thomasville passed away on Wednesday July 14, 2021 at Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Caldwell County, NC, she was a daughter of Lynn Leland Munday and Nellie Geneva Crotts Munday. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. “Sonny” Collins: two sisters, Charlotte Wynn and Helen Williamson; and a brother JD Munday. She is survived by a son; Alan V. Collins and wife Donna; two granddaughters, Natalie Bennett and Mandy Garren (husband Bobby); three great-grandchildren, Austin Hudson, Jakob Hudson and Gracie Clayton, all of Hendersonville, NC; as well as a sister-in-law Peggy Wilson and several nieces and nephews in the Triad area.
Merzell attended Davidson County and Thomasville City Schools and worked for 30 years at Western Electric/Alcatel-Lucent in Winston-Salem before retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a life-long member of Trinity Methodist Church. She was also proudly one of the oldest members of the Silver Sneakers class at Triangle Fitness Center in Thomasville. Undoubtedly, her connection with this group gave her social, physical, and emotional support which extended her life. She particularly enjoyed baking cakes and sharing recipes at birthday gatherings.
A funeral will be held at Trinity Methodist Church in Thomasville on Saturday July 17, 2021 at 11:00 o’clock with Rev. Rodney Burton and Rev. Jerry Webb officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will take place at Shepherd Memorial Park in Hendersonville on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 11:00 o’clock. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Masonic Children’s Home, 600 College Street Oxford, NC 27565. J C Green and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
