Ronald Ford Gardner Obituary

Ronald Ford Gardner, 79, passed away on February 17, 2026 at Rose Hill Retirement Community in Marion, NC after an extended illness.  Born on December 13, 1946, Ron grew up in Black Mountain, NC.  He was the eldest child of Mary McMahan and John Gardner, both of whom preceded him in death.

A 1965 graduate of Owen High School, he was also a member of the football team.  He served his country in the United States Army from 1966-1967.  After his military service, Ron began a long and distinguished career as a truck driver, first with Bigelow, and later with Walmart, where he drove for 30 years and achieved an extraordinary 3 million accident-free miles.

During these years, Ron married Linda Ruth Simmons Gardner, who also preceded him in death.  He lovingly adopted her daughter, Stephanie Gardner-Cole (Hodge), and embraced the role of husband and father with devotion and pride.

Ron is survived by his brother, Mike Gardner (Susan) and his sister, Diane Marsh (Wayne), along with extended family and many friends, who cherished his humor, kindness, and unforgettable storytelling.  Of all his nicknames, “Whammer Jammer” suited him best, he could spin a tale so convincingly that you’d swear every word was true.

He loved Carolina basketball, working in his yard with Linda, and striking up conversations with anyone, anywhere.  Ron never met a stranger, and he brought laughter and connection wherever he went.  His stories, his grin, and his easy way with people will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in knowing we will see him again in a place free from pain and suffering.
