Sandra Lee (Sapp) Alphin Obituary

Sandra Lee Sapp Alphin entered the more immediate presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on May 26 at her home, after the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband and family were by her side. She was born on June 24, 1938, in Winston-Salem to Clifton F. Sapp, Sr. and Irene Brandon Sapp. A lifelong member of Friedland Moravian Church, Sandra served faithfully as a diener, Girl Scout leader, choir and band member, youth leader, nursery worker, and member of the Women’s Fellowship and the “Have Buns Will Travel” group. She was also a member of Evangeline Rebekah Lodge #27 and the LAPM, where she held many offices and served as pianist, as well as the Wallburg VFD Ladies Auxiliary and the Motsinger Heights Women’s Club.

Sandra graduated from Robert B. Glenn High School and remained close to her friends until her health declined. On July 19, 1958, she married Charles R. (Bob) Alphin, and together they built a rewarding life. They began their family in Winston-Salem and, through Bob’s career, lived in Durham, Goldsboro, Raleigh, and New Bern before returning to Winston-Salem. In 1976, they founded Bob Alphin and Sons, Inc. Pest Control and retired in March 2024. Throughout the years, Sandra served as the company’s treasurer and secretary while raising her children and grandchildren. She was an excellent cook, especially known for her Moravian cookies, iced tea, and her husband’s favorite, Black Walnut Pound Cake. While living in Raleigh, she entered her Moravian cookies in the State Fair and won two blue ribbons. Sandra was also a skilled seamstress who made clothes for her family and did alterations for friends and relatives.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Kathy Sapp Roggenkamp, and her husband, Brian; her sister-in-law, Ruby (Roy) Lineback; her infant son, David Lee Alphin; and her son, Barry F. Alphin. She is survived by her husband, Bob; her children, Robert (Beth) Alphin, Debbie (Larry) James, and Christine Alphin; her grandchildren, Tracy (Larry) Clements, Kevin (Emily) Alphin, Kimberly (Ty) Smith, Heather Reed, Derek James, and Jodie Durham; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Clifton F. (Donna) Sapp Jr.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to her caretaker, Jessie, and to Well Care Hospice, especially her nurse, Ericka, for their compassionate care. They also appreciate the kindness and support of special neighbors and friends Michael, Wanda and Mackenzie Bowden.
