Stephen Whitten Obituary

Mr. Stephen (Steve) Land Whitten, 75, of East Holly Hill Road, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Steve was born in Davidson County to the late Guyon Eugene and Margaret Louise Rock Whitten on January 20, 1943. He served his country in the United States Army Reserve. Steve attended NC State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Engineering and Bachelor of Animal Science. He was also a longtime member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Steve will be remembered as a faithful member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Thomasville, where he served as song leader and member of the RL Pope Bible Class. Music brought much joy in Steve's life; he sang in the church choir, the Lamplighters Quartet, and he played saxophone in the Tom Holladay Orchestra. Steve was very accomplished in his professional life working as a chemist, realtor, musician, and artist. Steve felt his life was most complete when spending time with his family, being involved with his church, spending time with his dog, and being around any body of water; boating, swimming, or fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Paige Whitten, in 1999. Surviving are his wife of 17 years, Ann Presley Whitten of the home; six sons, Matt Whitten and wife Bireen of Salt Lake City, UT, Bo Whitten of High Point, Franklin Whitten and wife Leigh of Thomasville, Luke Whitten and wife Tobi of Greensboro, Jason Barnes and wife Natascha of Apex, Dale Cox of Kapaau, HI; a daughter, Amanda Norman and husband Mark of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Gene Whitten and wife Sue of Spartanburg, SC, John Whitten of Greenville, David Whitten of Greensboro; six grandchildren; and many extended family, church family, and friends. A funeral service will be held on Friday January 4, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Memorial United Methodist Church in Thomasville with Rev. Ben Devoid and Rev. Peggy Finch officiating. The family will receive friends following the funeral in the church narthex. A visitation and viewing will be held on Thursday night from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the JC Green and Sons funeral home in Thomasville.
