Obituary

Thurman Powell, 77, of Thomasville went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, June 13, 2021 at Pine Ridge Nursing and Rehab Center.

Thurman was born May 16, 1944 in Columbus County to Marion Gollie Powell and Lucy Belle Williams Powell.  In 1984 he moved his young family to Thomasville NC, where he pursued a job with Thomasville Furniture Industries. He retired from TFI after 22 years of service. Thurman was a member of Wayside Tabernacle Freewill Baptist Church in Thomasville.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara Ann Spivey Powell; daughter, Karen Powell; son, Thurman Travis Powell (Sherry); grandchildren, Justin Hunt and Aaron Russell; step-grandchildren, Boone, Sarah, Luke and Logan; six step-great-grands; brother, Charles Lee Powell (Judy) of Wilmington, NC; many beloved cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sister, Virginia Powell Marlow; sister, Arthalia Powell Strickland; brother, Thurston Powell; sister, Mary Ellen Powell Hallowell.

Thurman was passionate about sharing the gospel of Jesus. In the early days of their marriage, Thurman and Barbara, along with their daughter Karen, would travel and sing.  He and his wife were devoted to traveling around doing evangelistic ministry, singing and preaching the Word of God throughout their marriage.  He loved playing his guitar and later in life learned to play the piano. More recently, he took up bird-watching and fine art coloring. He liked old westerns and comedies. Thurman enjoyed deep-sea fishing with his brother Charlie and never turned down an opportunity to go with his son Travis out on the Jon-boat, where they laughed and made loads of fond memories.  He was the jolliest, kindest, most compassionate person, who never met a stranger.  Thurman was loved by all!
