Tony Leon Yates, 76, of Thomasville, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on July 30, 2025, at Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth. He was born on December 1, 1948, in Thomasville to the late Sallie Bell Yates and Leon Nathaniel Yates.
Tony spent most of his youth in his hometown of Thomasville, North Carolina. After graduating from Thomasville Senior High School in 1967, he moved to Hampton Roads, Virginia, where he built a life rooted in hard work and craftsmanship. A master upholsterer and furniture builder, he owned a small business reupholstering everything from furniture to automobiles, boat interiors, and local restaurant booths. He later began a long career as a civil service worker in the air conditioning mechanic field, where he proudly served and retired after 37 years of dedicated service.
Tony enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, especially time spent at the beach, boating, and listening to his favorite oldies music.
Tony is survived by his daughter, Lorrie Yates Spivey, and her husband, Bradley; his son, Bryan Yates, and his wife, Tammi; eight grandchildren—Shallon, Kirk, Julia, Macy, Reese, Pyper, Alysa, and Chase; and three great granddaughters, Saylor, Aria, and Harper. He is also remembered by his special friend, Brenda Santos.
Tony gave his best and lived with a steadfast work ethic that will be remembered by all who knew him. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” (Colossians 3:23) In this time of sorrow, may the family find comfort in the promise: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) Tony will be dearly missed by his family and all who loved him, especially Lorrie and Bryan
