Virginia “Ginny” Abbott Benbow Mason, 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2025 while at Trinity Elms Assisted Living after several years with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born on June 3, 1934 in Ossining, New York, a daughter of the late William and Carlotta Lane Abbott. Ginny was the founding member of the Brain Injury Association of NC after her son, Bill, had an automobile accident in 1979. She worked tirelessly with Bill for fifteen years helping his rehabilitation back to independent living. After retirement she enjoyed traveling, living in Florida and North Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Thomas “Tom” Benbow, Jr.; daughter, Susan Elizabeth “Sue” Cantrell; brother, William Abbott; grandson, Ryan K. Mason; second husband, Kenneth Chandler “Kenny” Mason; and step-son, David L. Mason.
Surviving are her sons, John Thomas “Tom” Benbow, III and wife Amanda, and William Edgar “Bill” Benbow; step-son, Kenneth M. Mason and wife Donna; sisters, Loretta Gallo, Nancy Yosi and husband Ron, and Pat Abbott; brother, Jim Abbott; three grandchildren, Jessi Benbow, Keegan T. Mason, and Michelle Mason Pace; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Parklawn Memorial Park with Father, Cory Catron officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 12:30 until 1:30 PM at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. NC Hwy 109, Winston-Salem.
