Willard John Akes Obituary

Willard John "John" Akes, 87, of Thomasville, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 22, 2026.

John was born on February 14, 1939, in Leon, Iowa, to the late Willard Martin Akes and Myra Bohnenkamp Akes. He often spoke fondly of his childhood, describing himself as blessed to have been raised by loving, hardworking parents and surrounded by a close-knit family.

After high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, a chapter of his life that remained one of his greatest sources of pride. During his four years of service, he served in the Air Force Honor Guard in Washington, D.C., participating in Arlington National Cemetery burial details, Air Force One security, and duties supporting the Joint Chiefs of Staff before serving in Korea and later at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona.

While stationed in Tucson, John met the woman he would call "the best thing that ever happened to me"—Barbara Jean Newton. They married and built a life side by side, sharing 45 wonderful years together. In his journal, John wrote, "My life began when I married your mother. I've loved every moment with her. We traveled the road sharing our load, side by side." Their love story remained the defining chapter of his life, and after Barbara's passing in 2007, he missed her every day.

Following his military service, John began a 36-year career with North State Communications, where he earned the respect of coworkers and friends through his loyalty, work ethic, and steady character.

John's greatest joy was his family. He and Barbara were deeply grateful for their children and immensely proud of the lives they built. He often said that becoming a grandfather to four beautiful grandchildren was one of life's greatest blessings.

John never met a stranger. He made friends wherever he went and enjoyed visiting with neighbors, playing cards with friends twice each week, meeting friends for breakfast, and buying classic cars. He and Barbara shared a love of travel and explored much of the United States in their motorhome, with Alaska holding a special place in their hearts.

John loved his family, his country, and the Lord. He lived with humility and gratitude, believing he had been fortunate in life and thankful for every blessing he received.

John was preceded in death by the love of his life and soulmate, Barbara Jean Newton Akes; and by his second wife, Mildred Akes.

He is survived by his son, Marty Akes and wife Annette of Thomasville; daughter, Holly Akes Bowman and husband Travis of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Jacob Akes, Madison Akes, Riley Bowman, and Dylan Bowman; and many friends and neighbors who will miss his kindness, humor, and friendship.

In a letter written to his family, John reflected on his life and wrote, "When my time is up, I want you to see how great I've had it." Among his final wishes was a message to those he loved:

"Don't be sad. I've had a great life."

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 29, 2026, at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel in Thomasville, with Reverend Steve Manley officiating.
