William "Billy" Greenawalt, Jr. Obituary

William “Billy” Roy Greenawalt Jr., 64, of Linwood, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on February 26, 2026.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Floral Garden Memorial Park with Dr. Glenn Harris officiating. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 AM at the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville.

Born on December 4, 1961, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Billy was the son of William Roy Greenawalt Sr. and Linda Miller. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during his service.

Billy was an entrepreneur and hardworking provider throughout his life. He owned a health food store and a sound shop before spending the majority of his career at Hollins in Greensboro, where he served as an Operations Manager.

Billy had a deep appreciation for creativity, craftsmanship, and the outdoors. He loved artwork and handcrafts and spent time basket weaving and leather working. He enjoyed farming and gardening, attending local pow wows, and collecting stickers for his beloved golf cart. Billy also enjoyed cooking and was especially fond of eating Shoo Fly Pie, along with favorites like French Dip sandwiches and seafood boils. Family gatherings were especially important to Billy. He was the self-appointed Fireworks Director every Fourth of July, creating celebrations that family and friends will never forget. He loved hosting Thanksgiving, restoring the old barn on the property he shared with his wife, building a chicken coop for their “four” chickens, and spending time searching for arrowheads.

Billy and his wife lovingly restored a barn more than 100 years old and created a small farm where he cared for their horse Honey, donkey Buddy, ducks, and many chickens. At home he enjoyed the companionship of their dog Thunder, and he also cherished the memories of their beloved pets Bison, a dog, and Charlie, a cat, who had passed. Billy adored his wife, Rebecca, and the two were happily married for nearly a decade. Together they enjoyed road trips exploring North Carolina and traveling to Savannah, Georgia, and Florida. Billy and Rebecca also loved discovering new places to eat, often traveling to restaurants featured in Our State magazine.

Billy will be remembered as a kind and steady presence who found joy in bringing people together. He was someone who often stepped back and let others shine, quietly supporting those around him and filling gatherings with warmth, laughter, and memorable moments. Billy often said there were three things you could never spend too much money on: art, food, and music—because all three enrich your life. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Greenawalt; his son, Dakota Greenawalt and wife Shandani; his daughter, Aiyana Gray and husband Marshall; his stepchildren, Gina, Drew, and Samantha; and his cherished grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Amos, Josiah, Dominic, Evan, and Emmett. Billy’s memory will live on in the stories shared, the traditions he created, and the love he gave to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
